Cancer awareness, prevention and control

Cancer is a public health problem worldwide affecting all categories of persons. It is the second common cause of death in developed countries and among the three leading causes of death in developing countries. Socioeconomic differences in cancer outcomes have also been observed worldwide, persons with lower socioeconomic status were likely to have higher cancer incidence and mortality rates.

In Nigeria, Cancer incidence is reportedly on the increase, with female cancers leading.

Different factors have been identified for the Increasing incidence, and they include poor awareness about the risk factors, socio-economic status and changes in lifestyle. The more common cancers in Nigeria are cancers of the breast, cervical and ovarian cancers, colorectal cancer and cancer of the prostate and Liver- though changing patterns are also noticed. Many of these cancers are preventable by reducing the risk factors, or through vaccination and screening. Others can be detected and diagnosed early in their development.

Through extensive cancer awareness among underserved communities, facilitation of access to vaccination and screening services, Light a candle health Initiative seeks to reduce the incidence, morbidity and mortality of cancer among communities and populations it serves.

In the future, Lach-Initiative will partner with the government and strategic players to implement/facilitate systematic and integrated evidence-based interventions for prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and palliative care.
